The elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, may propose to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un the lifting of sanctions in exchange for a reduction in cooperation with Russia.
This was stated by Alexander Kraev, an expert from the Ukrainian Prism Foreign Policy Council, in a comment to the YouTube channel RBK-Ukraine.
In his opinion, Trump will, as usual, start with threats.
"It will again be about how he will scorch North Korea with fire and fury. He will remind that Kim Jong-un was once referred to as 'little rocket man.' He will provoke, test the limits of what is permissible, to see how Kim will react," Kraev said.
He believes that Trump might once again hold a summit with Kim Jong-un to demonstrate that negotiations are possible and to push the idea of partially lifting trade restrictions on North Korea.
"He could push this through the UN or through cooperation with Europeans, saying that while we won't trade with them, at least let’s not severely block their trade with others. Of course, we have to consider what will happen against the backdrop of Russia, but let’s remember that the first discussions between the leadership of South Korea and Trump’s cabinet were about Russian-North Korean relations, and they themselves spoke about the need to prevent further rapprochement," the expert added.
Kraev believes that if Trump can offer North Korea conditions for lifting sanctions in exchange for reducing ties with Russia, it could work.
"Essentially, this would be the same bargaining that is being offered to China. China does not fully support Russia, and therefore remains on good terms with the US and the EU. If this tactic worked with China, why wouldn't it work with North Korea?" the expert noted.
Recently, media reported that the team of newly elected US President Donald Trump is discussing the possibility of direct negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The team believes that a new diplomatic push could reduce the risks of armed conflict. In particular, Trump is considering a direct approach based on existing relations as the most likely way to break the ice with Kim.
According to sources, political discussions are fluid, and the newly elected president has not made any final decisions.
At the same time, it is unclear what Kim Jong-un could offer in response to Trump. North Korea has ignored four years of calls from US President Joe Biden to start negotiations without preconditions. Meanwhile, North Korea hopes to expand its missile arsenal and strengthen its ties with Russia.
