A delegation from South Korea is set to visit Ukraine this week. Representatives from Seoul plan to share information regarding the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Yonhap News Agency.
According to the publication, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol discussed the plan during a phone call with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who confirmed that North Korean forces had been stationed in the Kursk region of Russia, on the front line to participate in the war in Ukraine.
"I hope that under Secretary General Stoltenberg's leadership, NATO will double its efforts to monitor and block illegal exchanges between Russia and North Korea in solidarity and coordination," he stated.
Yoon Suk-yeol noted that the South Korean delegation is scheduled to hold a briefing for the EU Committee on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on Tuesday, and then visit Ukraine to meet with intelligence and defense representatives to share information from the battlefield and discuss cooperation measures.
During a second phone call with Yoon a week later, Stoltenberg said that the involvement of North Korean forces in the war in Ukraine is a "top priority" for NATO, expressing hope for continued discussions on countermeasures and information sharing related to the conflict.
Prior to his conversation with Stoltenberg, Yoon had a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to share information about the movement of North Korean troops and discuss cooperation with EU member states.
"This is a serious situation, as the actual deployment of North Korean troops to the front line in Ukraine could occur sooner than expected," Yoon remarked.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that there are already three thousand North Korean soldiers in Russia.
According to The Wall Street Journal, North Korea has provided Russia with non-elite troops for the war in Ukraine. However, it was previously reported that North Korea had transferred its special forces to Russia, which is one of the most secretive units in the world.
As reported by The New York Times, Russian and North Korean troops are likely preparing for an offensive in the Kursk region, which could commence soon.
