The leader of the German opposition, Friedrich Merz, who is currently leading in polls ahead of the anticipated snap elections, stated that he will seek to establish agreements with the new U.S. President Donald Trump to enhance his country's international standing.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Bloomberg.
In an interview with Stern magazine, the head of the German Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz, referred to Chancellor Olaf Scholz as a "lame duck" and urged him to expedite the timeline for early federal elections following the collapse of the three-party coalition government last week.
"In Germany, we have never truly articulated and defended our interests well enough, and we need to change that," Merz said.
"Americans are much more aggressive. It shouldn't end with only one side benefiting, but rather that we reach advantageous agreements for both parties. Trump would call it a deal," he added.
Merz accused Scholz's left-center government of being misled by Trump's reelection after supporting Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. "Trump has a good memory. The current federal government will no longer be heard by the new administration. Scholz is now a lame duck on the international stage," Merz stated.
As an example of a potential "deal" with Trump, the German politician mentioned the supply of American military aircraft. The CDU leader asserted that since Germany agreed to purchase F-35 fighter jets from the U.S., they should be serviced in Germany with American support. "This would be a good deal for both sides," he said.
Merz also mentioned that he has spoken with individuals who know Trump well and that the newly elected U.S. president should be approached with "a straightforward position and clarity."
Recall that earlier in an interview with Bild, Merz stated that Scholz did not strive to ensure Ukraine's victory in the war initiated by Russia. Instead, he helped to avoid a loss.
