U.S. President-elect Donald Trump had a conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on Thursday. This marked the first phone call following the Republican's election victory.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing The Washington Post.
According to a source, during the call, Trump advised Putin not to escalate the war in Ukraine and reminded him of Washington's significant presence in Europe.
The publication further states that both leaders discussed the goal of peace on the European continent. Trump, for his part, expressed interest in subsequent conversations to discuss the "swift resolution of the war in Ukraine."
The call, which had not been previously reported, took place amidst general uncertainty regarding how Trump would reset relations with U.S. allies and adversaries following his victory on Tuesday.
According to two individuals familiar with the situation, the Ukrainian government was informed about the call to Putin and did not oppose the conversation. Ukrainian officials have long understood that Trump would engage with the Russian dictator regarding a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine issue.
During his presidential campaign, Trump stated that he would immediately end the war but did not provide details on how he intended to achieve this. People familiar with the matter reported that Trump privately indicated he would support an agreement whereby Russia retains part of the occupied territories, and he briefly touched upon the issue of land during the call.
Recall that just a few days earlier, Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the Ukrainian leader, their discussion was excellent, and they have agreements in place. In particular, to maintain close dialogue and develop cooperation between the countries.
