In Poland, there is hope that the elected U.S. President Donald Trump will be able to improve the situation for Ukraine.
This was stated by Lukasz Adamski, Deputy Director of the Meroszewski Dialogue Center, in a comment to RBK-Ukraine.
"Unlike Western Europe, there is no fear in Poland regarding Trump's rise to power. Instead, there is a certain hope that he might somehow change the situation in favor of Ukraine," Adamski said.
According to him, a challenge would arise if Trump decided to hold a second Yalta Conference at Ukraine's expense. Recall that the Yalta Conference took place at the end of World War II in February 1945, where the leaders of the USSR, the USA, and the UK divided spheres of influence in Europe.
"I believe we are far from that scenario, fortunately. But if it were to happen, it would pose a challenge for Poland on how to respond. Any agreements in a 'Yalta-style' threaten not only Ukraine but also Poland, as it means that the opinions of small and medium-sized states are disregarded and the world returns to the concert of great powers," Adamski noted.
It is worth mentioning that during his election campaign, elected U.S. President Donald Trump made skeptical statements regarding support for Ukraine. European capitals fear the return of Donald Trump to the White House. Assistance to Ukraine from the U.S. could cease immediately.
The attitude of Ukrainians towards Poland has significantly worsened after Polish carriers conducted a blockade of several border crossing points with Ukraine from early November 2023 to mid-January 2024. Additionally, in early 2024, Polish farmers blocked the border.
The border blockade could not fail to impact public opinion. In January 2024, less than half of Ukrainians maintained a positive attitude towards Poles.
