80% of Ukrainians support the completion of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant because they understand that nuclear energy means consistently low tariffs.
This was stated by economist Boris Kushniruk in a comment to RBK-Ukraine, discussing the results of a recent survey by the "Rating" group.
"Ukrainians are not foolish—they know very well which energy generation ensures affordable electricity. Nuclear energy is the cheapest and most reliable worldwide. People see that importing electricity is expensive, which is why they support the development of domestic generation," noted Kushniruk.
According to him, the lack of completion of energy blocks will only increase electricity prices in the future.
"The sooner Ukraine launches new energy blocks, the greater the chances of keeping tariffs stable. If we do not develop nuclear generation, we will remain dependent on expensive imports. The money currently spent on purchasing electricity from abroad could be used for the completion of the KhNPP," the economist explained.
Let’s recall that the draft law on purchasing nuclear reactors from Bulgaria for the completion of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant is on the agenda of the Verkhovna Rada for Tuesday.
The document provides for the legal formalization of an agreement with Bulgaria, which will allow Ukraine to acquire two VVER-1000 reactors necessary for finishing the construction of the energy blocks.
President Volodymyr Zelensky in his video address also emphasized the need for the adoption of the draft law on the completion of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant.
Previously, the head of state also noted that the development of nuclear energy is a priority for Ukraine, as it will ensure stable tariffs and the energy security of the country.
