The President of Slovakia, Peter Pellegrini, has rejected all requests from citizens of the country to join the Ukrainian army to participate in the war against Russia. Since taking office, he has officially received four such requests.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing TASR.
It is stated that one of the requests was submitted by a Slovak citizen during the term of the former president, Zuzana Čaputová, but its fate was decided only by the current head of state.
"If Slovak citizens wish to legally take part in combat operations on the side of the Ukrainian army, they must first seek permission from the president of the republic to serve in the armed forces of another state," explained the Slovak president's office.
They also noted that if Slovak citizens join the Armed Forces of Ukraine without the specified permission, they face criminal prosecution.
It is worth mentioning that the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico halted military assistance to Ukraine from state reserves last autumn after coming to power.
Recently, the Slovak Foreign Ministry announced that the country will no longer supply military equipment to Ukraine. However, the country has found another way to assist Ukraine.
