The proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to link further military aid to Ukraine with access rights to its valuable raw materials does not align with the interests of Kyiv.
This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing the N-TV channel.
"It would be very selfish" to use the country's resources to finance defense support, Scholz declared after an informal EU summit in Brussels.
According to him, "the focus should be on ensuring that Ukraine can fund its reconstruction."
These are significant challenges, considering the enormous destruction. Therefore, the country's resources should be utilized to finance everything needed after the war, the German Chancellor added.
Recall that U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. has provided more military and economic assistance to Ukraine than its European allies, and expressed his intention to establish an agreement guaranteeing access to Ukrainian rare earth metals. He believes that such an agreement could be a condition for the continuation of American support in the war against Russia.
The strategic importance of Ukraine's rare earth metals was highlighted by President Volodymyr Zelensky during the presentation of his "victory plan" last fall. At that time, he proposed to U.S. and European allies to establish an agreement for the investment and protection of valuable metals.
