The European Union will need to bolster its support for Ukraine if a challenging period follows the U.S. presidential elections. Now is not the time for war fatigue.
According to RBK-Ukraine, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen stated this in an interview with Yle.
"Currently, we have solid confidence in the group supporting Ukraine, which includes the United States, that the United States will continue its support," the Defense Minister assured.
However, he indicated that the U.S. elections may still impact support for Ukraine. If that happens, Europe will need to provide more financial assistance to Ukraine than it does now.
"If it gets tough, Europe must take responsibility for it. This means that European taxpayers' wallets need to find more money to support Ukraine," Häkkänen added.
He emphasized that now is not the time for war fatigue or discussions about peace being made on Russia's terms. Peace must be achieved on Ukraine's terms.
As a reminder, presidential elections will be held in the U.S. on November 5. The main candidates are Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. There is no clear favorite.
As noted in a comment by RBK-Ukraine expert Alexander Kraev from the Ukrainian Prism Foreign Policy Council, Trump is likely to push Ukraine towards negotiations.
