Next year, Zaporizhzhia is set to receive a new automated air quality monitoring station.
There is an opportunity to involve the city in a project implemented as part of the collaboration between the Ministry of Ecology and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
During a working trip, I visited one of the stationary air monitoring stations and inspected the mobile environmental monitoring laboratory in Zaporizhzhia. For such an industrial hub, it is crucial to enhance the network of observation posts to more swiftly record pollution, analyze the causes of its occurrence, forecast the deterioration or improvement of the situation, and make timely decisions.
Additionally, the industrial burden in the region has been exacerbated by the large-scale aggression from Russia. As a result of Russia's actions, the damage from air pollution caused by combustion products in Zaporizhzhia is already estimated at nearly 234 million UAH.
Therefore, the focus of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine is on strengthening collaboration with international partners to develop the monitoring system in Ukraine.
Our goal is to transition from fixed observations conducted several times a day to continuous round-the-clock monitoring of not only the state of atmospheric air but also all other components of the environment.
