The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has imposed a 25% tariff on all goods from Colombia and sanctions against the country. This decision came after Bogotá refused to accept planes carrying deported migrants from the United States just hours ago.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing a post by Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social.

"I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, carrying a significant number of illegal criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia. This order was given by the socialist president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular among his people," the message states.

According to the U.S. President, Petro's ban on these flights jeopardized the national and public safety of the United States, prompting Trump to instruct his administration to immediately implement a series of decisive retaliatory measures. Specifically, the head of the White House:

  • ordered the introduction of emergency 25% tariffs on all goods imported into the U.S. from Colombia. Trump stated that the tariffs would increase to 50% within a week;
  • directed a travel ban to the U.S. for Colombian government officials, as well as all allies and supporters, including an immediate revocation of visas;
  • announced the implementation of visa sanctions against all members of the party, their families, and supporters of the Colombian government;
  • implemented enhanced customs and border checks for all Colombian citizens and goods on national security grounds;
  • instructed the full enforcement of sanctions under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA), including sanctions in the financial, banking, and treasury sectors.

"These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of criminals that they have forced to enter the United States," Trump concluded.

It is worth noting that the issue of mass deportations of illegal migrants from the U.S. has been one of Donald Trump's key campaign promises. Recently, on January 24, the White House announced that the country had already begun deporting illegal immigrants.

However, it is not just Colombia. Yesterday, it became known that Mexico also refused to accept a plane that was deporting migrants from the U.S. The country declined the request from the U.S. President.
