The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced that he has instructed the country's Ministry of Trade to raise tariffs on imports from the United States by 25%. This decision came after President Donald Trump declared that he would impose tariffs and a series of new sanctions against Colombia.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing CNN.
"I have been informed that you are imposing a 50% tariff on the results of our human labor that are imported into the United States, and I am doing the same," Petro wrote on platform X.
Recall that on Sunday, January 26, President Donald Trump announced new measures against Colombia. This followed the country's blocking of the landing of two American military planes carrying deported migrants from the United States.
Specifically, 25% tariffs have been implemented (which will rise to 50% in a week), along with visa sanctions, a travel ban for Colombian officials to the U.S., and more.
Officials from the Trump administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stated that the deportation flights were initially approved between the countries, but the Colombian president unexpectedly canceled the agreement while the planes were already in the air. Petro indicated in his post on X that he opposes the use of military aircraft for deportation and the way the U.S. treats Colombian migrants.
