Lithuanian border guards are taking measures to enhance border security. This is in connection with the upcoming "elections" for the president of Belarus.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing the Lithuanian publication LRT.
Gedrius Mishutis, a representative of the State Border Guard Service, noted that the capacity to respond to incidents is being increased should they occur. In particular, additional forces and resources will be deployed.
"In light of the Belarusian elections, the level of vigilance is heightened. It is anticipated that in the event of incidents, other agencies may be involved - the national defense system, the Public Security Service, the police, and the Lithuanian Rifle Union," said Mishutis.
As reported by LRT, the Lithuanian border has been under enhanced protection for several years, starting with the migration crisis of 2021.
It is worth noting that the presidential "elections" in Belarus are taking place today, January 26. The self-proclaimed president Alexander Lukashenko is running for a seventh term. He has held this position for over 30 years.
Recall that in 2024, the Lithuanian Department of State Security stated that the sharp increase in the flow of immigrants from Belarus to Lithuania poses additional threats and risks to the country's national security.
We also reported that in 2023, due to the influx of migrants from Belarus, Lithuania announced its intention to construct an additional barrier along the border with Belarus and Russia stretching for hundreds of kilometers.
