The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, believes that Google's decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf on Google Maps is inappropriate. This change will only be applicable in the United States.
According to RBK-Ukraine, Sheinbaum's statement was reported by Reuters.
Sheinbaum presented a letter addressed to Google, in which her government asserts that the United States cannot unilaterally change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, which is shared with Cuba and Mexico.
Mexico argues that the United States cannot legally alter the name of the gulf, as per the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a country's sovereign territory extends only up to 12 nautical miles (approximately 22 kilometers) from its coastline.
"(The name change - ed.) may only pertain to 12 nautical miles from the coastline of the United States of America," Sheinbaum stated while reading the letter at her regular morning press conference.
She clarified that Mexico has requested Google to "prominently display" the map of Mexican America.
"We ask that when the term 'Mexican America' is entered into the search engine, the map we presented appears," Sheinbaum explained.
Recall that shortly after Donald Trump officially became President of the United States, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf.
Later, Google announced that within the United States, the Gulf of Mexico will be displayed as the American Gulf.
