On Sunday, February 2, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The representatives of the two countries discussed the war in Ukraine, European defense issues, and more.
This is reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the UK government website.
The leaders agreed on the importance of strengthening the bilateral partnership further. Speaking about Ukraine, Starmer informed Scholz of his recent visit and reiterated the necessity of ensuring the country's position is as strong as possible in the coming months to achieve peace through strength. The leaders also concurred that Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine highlighted the need to enhance and coordinate defense production across Europe.
During the meeting, the government's strategic defense review was also discussed, which is set to be published later this year. According to Starmer, it will take into account the lessons learned from Ukraine, as well as the need to maneuver in the face of ongoing aggression and the hostile activities of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin throughout Europe.
The parties also agreed on the importance of an even stronger bilateral partnership between Britain and Germany.
Additionally, Starmer and Scholz discussed the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza. The leaders welcomed the release of hostages and emphasized the importance of completing all stages of the agreement. The Prime Minister added that a key point is the decision to establish two states, which would ensure a secure and reliable Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestine.
Let us recall that on January 16, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was on an official visit to Kyiv. Following his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the parties signed a 100-year partnership agreement. The document aims to build strong ties between the countries in all possible areas: from trade, security, and defense to science and technology, education, culture, and much more.
