Hungary may block the automatic extension of European sanctions against Russia. This move would confirm that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is acting in Moscow's interests, according to Poland.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing a statement from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on social media platform X.
Recently, Hungary's Minister of the Cabinet, Gergely Gulyás, stated that Donald Trump's presidency in the U.S. has created a "new situation" in which sanctions against Russia cannot continue automatically.
"If Orban truly blocks European sanctions at a crucial moment for the war, it will be abundantly clear that in this grand game for the security and future of Europe, he is playing on Putin's team, not ours. With all the consequences of this fact," responded the Polish Prime Minister.
We remind you that soon the ambassadors of EU countries are set to meet to discuss the automatic extension of sanctions against Russia. Previously, such decisions, which required unanimous support, were made without complications. However, this time, the EU is concerned about Hungary's plans to block the extension, as they have no backup options.
Nevertheless, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, recently expressed optimism that EU sanctions against Russia will be extended before their expiration date.
"I see no reasons to weaken or lift the sanctions right now," he stated.
