The European Union will not prohibit the purchase of Russian liquefied natural gas in the new sanctions package. However, Brussels will impose certain restrictions.

This is reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Politico.

The European Commission plans to officially present the 16th sanctions package against Russia on Wednesday, January 29.

The publication, referencing two EU diplomats, notes that the European Commission's proposal will not include a blanket ban on the import of Russian LNG. However, it is expected to prohibit the entry of liquefied natural gas from Russia into EU terminals that are not connected to the gas system. Politico adds that the restriction will not affect most LNG imports.

The sanctions package will also include limitations on Russia's so-called "shadow fleet." According to two other diplomats, the EU will target 74 new vessels.

Additionally, according to three diplomats, the new proposal will push for restrictions on aluminum exports from Moscow. The EU still relies on Russia for about 6% of its aluminum imports.

As previously reported, the new sanctions package will also target gaming equipment, such as Microsoft's Xbox, which, according to EU representatives, is used by Russia for drone piloting.

However, the decision regarding LNG disappoints some EU countries. Last month, 10 countries, including Finland, Poland, and the Baltic states, urged the European Commission to "ban the import of Russian gas and LNG as soon as possible."

"It’s a pity. To some extent, we are disappointed," said Lithuania's Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas to the publication.

EU Sanctions Against Russia

Recall that the EU adopted the 15th sanctions package against Russia in December 2024. The restrictions concerned the "shadow fleet" and the energy sector of the Russian Federation. The sanctions list included 54 individuals and 30 organizations from Russia, China, and North Korea.

According to media reports, the EU wants to announce the 16th sanctions package against Russia on the third anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. However, Hungary is once again blocking sanctions against Moscow.

According to Politico, Budapest agreed to concessions at the last moment, but set conditions.
