The opposition Democratic Party of Korea has called for President Yoon Suk-yeol to resign immediately following the announcement of martial law and its subsequent repeal by the country's parliament.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the agency Yonhap.
During an emergency session in the National Assembly, lawmakers from the opposition party declared that they would initiate impeachment proceedings against the president if he did not resign voluntarily.
"Yoon's declaration of martial law is a blatant violation of the Constitution. He did not adhere to any of the requirements of the Basic Law for declaring such a regime. This is a serious act of rebellion and a valid reason for impeachment," the resolution from the Democratic Party of Korea states.
Meanwhile, senior aides to Yoon Suk-yeol, including his chief of staff, have resigned en masse due to the controversial decision and its subsequent blocking by parliament.
Among them are the president's chief of staff, Chung Jin-suk, national security advisor Shin Won-sik, policy chief Song Tae-yoon, as well as seven other senior aides.
On December 3, President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Suk-yeol unexpectedly declared martial law in the country.
The decision triggered confrontations with law enforcement and military personnel outside the parliament building.
Several hours after the controversial decision, the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea approved a resolution demanding the repeal of martial law in the country. Later, the Cabinet of Ministers passed a similar resolution.
In the evening, Yoon lifted the martial law in South Korea. The special regime had been in effect for over six hours.
