The North Korean troops have retreated from the Kursk region due to significant losses. They are currently not engaged in combat operations.
This was confirmed by South Korean intelligence, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Yonhap News.
The South Korean intelligence agency released reconnaissance data confirming that the DPRK soldiers, who had been fighting alongside Russian forces against Ukraine, were withdrawn from the front lines. This took place in mid-January, likely due to heavy casualties.
"Since mid-January, there have been no indications that the North Korean troops deployed in Russia's Kursk region are participating in combat operations," said officials in South Korea.
It is estimated that North Korea sent approximately 11,000 servicemen to support Russia in its war against Ukraine. Of these, around 300 are believed to have been killed, and about 2,700 wounded, according to the South Korean intelligence agency.
According to the General Staff, recently, missile and artillery units of the Defense Forces struck the command post of the enemy grouping "Kursk" in the city of Rylsk.
As a result of the attack, the post was destroyed. Subsequently, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that as a result of Friday's strike on the command post in Rylsk, Kursk region, the Russians lost dozens of key officers. This included not only their own but also North Korean officers.
Earlier, the NYT reported that North Korean soldiers have not been seen on the front for about two weeks. Therefore, they were likely withdrawn due to heavy losses.
As mentioned by the representative of Ukraine's Special Operations Forces, Oleksandr Kindratenko, in a comment to RBK-Ukraine, Russia has redeployed North Koreans from several fronts.
